Bonkers Berkeley Revamp
BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA
A BALANCE OF CREAMY PINKS AND BOLD PATTERNS GIVE THIS TRANSITIONAL MODERN HOME A SOPHISTICATION WORTHY OF ITS MAGNIFICENT VIEW.
This project kicked off in early 2023, after my client Pia and her family moved into this stunning property in the Berkeley hills with to-die-for views of the San Francisco Bay. While we waited for the architect to finalize renovation plans, we started with some basic redecorating in the spaces that wouldn’t be impacted – adding a gorgeous woven wallpaper to her living room, more ambient lighting, a record player console, an oversize mirror to bring more light in, a new coffee table and set of lounge chairs. We also softened the space with some linen roman shades and had the contractors grout and limewash her dated 90’s stone fireplace for a much chicer and modern look. In the primary bedroom, we decided to hold off on replacing the carpeting until we were ready for a larger scale remodel upstairs, but we were able to paint the walls, add an accent wallpaper, and bring in a new bed, bedding, and nightstand lights to make the space feel as adult as possible (an important element when you’ve got a kid taking over every other room).
Once the downstairs renovation officially started, we pivoted to finalizing finishes and materials for Pia’s new kitchen, dining room, family room, and guest bathroom. For the bathroom, we really fell in love with this bold forest wallpaper that inspired the tile shapes and colors. It’s a pretty tight space, so it was important that we chose pieces that would make the floor space feel larger, which we accomplished through the pedestal vanity, sliding glass shower doors, and hidden washer/dryer unit behind custom cabinetry. In the kitchen, we wanted a much more subdued color palette that could be augmented with a lot of texture , which this combination of pale blush cabinetry, zellige brick backsplash, and veined quartzite counters accomplished beautifully. Pia already had this stunning teak dining table and chairs, but we decided to create a banquette on one side so we could push the eating area closer to the wall, opening up the walkway between the living room and kitchen. The consistency of these brass ombre light fixtures found throughout these rooms also helped tie the spaces together. I particularly love the Vänt panels we used to make the dining bench feel more welcoming and comfortable. We left the room opposite the kitchen as a malleable flex space, currently used as a family room turned kids play space. I love how this curved sofa hugs the walls, and with Pia’s family owning so much stunning Indian art and textiles, the more minimalist we left an area, the more room we created for her vast collection of art and keepsakes. Almost two years after we held our first consultation, the work is done and, Pia and her family have both welcomed their second child and moved back into a home that’s ready to host decades of celebrations and memories.
“PARTNERING WITH iSPY HOME DESIGN WAS THE BEST DECISION I MADE DURING MY RENOVATION.”
Partnering with iSPY Home Design was the best decision I made during my renovation. The thought of renovating a 100-year-old home with influences from various eras, while juggling two tech jobs, a toddler, and later discovering I was pregnant, felt overwhelming. Catherine’s support was truly invaluable — she captured our style effortlessly, making our home feel uniquely ours. Her attention to detail was remarkable, advising us on everything from furniture placement to sourcing high-quality, reasonably priced tiles and fixtures that seamlessly matched our home’s character. Catherine was not only easy to talk to but also incredibly organized, helping to reduce our stress while her meticulous planning kept everything on track.
